Life As A Live-In Care Nurse

Nursing is one of those careers that promises job security. I have never had trouble finding work as long as I’ve been willing to travel and work strange hours. It all comes with being a nurse. I love that I get to help people who are in pain or suffering otherwise. I have done emergency room shifts as well as psychiatric ward jobs. Lately, I have found happiness as a live-in care provider. My career choice has opened my eyes to all sorts of people and lifestyles I would never had been privy to otherwise.

Taking care of people comes naturally to me so becoming a nurse was an easy choice. As a kid, I took care of injured animals, often times baby ones that didn’t survive, and loved the delicate, loving work of feeding them with an eyedropper. When I was a teen, I worked part time at a local old folks home providing company and care. I have learned through these experiences and my nursing jobs that even the smallest amount of comfort can greatly improve the outlook of someone who is suffering.

After high school, I headed to college on the west coast and got a four year bachelor’s degree in nursing. Nursing programs are notoriously difficult to survive in, but I knew it was all for a good cause.

After college, I was a traveling nurse. This meant I traveled all over the US, sometimes with only a week or two of notice, helping out at hospitals who needed temporary nurses. Lots of times, I covered for someone out on maternity leave. With just a few months at each hospital, I developed a huge, thorough picture of the health care spectrum in the US.

Three years of traveling, though, and I was ready to settle down. I came back to my hometown and took a job with a live-in care company. This means I go to people’s houses and help them out with whatever they need help with. Sometimes I sleep at a patient’s house, too, to provide them care throughout the night and in the early morning.

An average day for me means stopping in at two or three different houses. Inside, I help the elderly and otherwise ailing. I usually start with the medical side of things, dressing wounds and handing out medications. However, I also help patients take showers, cook meals and more.

Of course, I also provide company. Lots of the people I see everyday are lonely. Not being able to leave your house greatly hinders one’s ability to make and keep friends. I never underestimate the power of a little friendly conversation.

I will be the first to tell you that there are hard, sad and frustrating times as a nurse. However, in the end providing care and support to people who are suffering is a rewarding enough experience to outweigh the hard times.
